Climb into the clouds with one of the world’s most beloved bedtime adventure stories for kids! When young Jack trades his family’s last cow for a handful of mysterious magic beans, his mother is far from pleased. She tosses the beans out the window, only for a colossal beanstalk to sprout overnight, twisting all the way up into the sky! Driven by curiosity and the hope of helping his struggling mother, Jack climbs the giant green vine and discovers a towering castle in the clouds. There, he must use his quick wits to outsmart a booming, hungry giant ("Fee-fi-fo-fum!") and rescue treasures—including a goose that lays golden eggs and a magical, self-playing harp. The Moral of the Story: Jack and the Beanstalk teaches children about resourcefulness, courage, and taking responsibility for your mistakes. While Jack starts out making a foolish trade, his bravery and quick thinking turn a bad situation into a triumph for his family. It also opens a gentle conversation with kids about the consequences of greed and knowing when you have enough. History & Origins: Rooted in ancient Indo-European oral folklore, scholars believe the story's core motif—"The Boy Who Stole the Ogre’s Treasure"—is thousands of years old. It first appeared in English print in 1734 as The Story of Jack Spriggins and the Enchanted Bean, and was later popularized by Benjamin Tabart in 1807 and folklorist Joseph Jacobs in his 1890 book English Fairy Tales.
